Renton Heart Month

Sudden cardiac arrest continues to be the leading cause of death in our nation and the driving force behind this campaign.  Each year firefighters provide free screenings in fire stations and at various locations throughout the community in an effort to reach people with this life saving information.  Last year over 4,000 screenings were provided by firefighters, with 822 people being identified as being at risk for a heart attack or stroke.  This year the city has teamed up with local businesses to introduce the “Passport to a Healthy Heart.” This is a fun way for citizens to become heart smart and have fun all at the same time. For more information on "Passport to a Healthy Heart" click here.

Renton is designated as StormReady

City is better prepared for hazardous weather events
On December 14, 2009, the National Weather Service (NWS) officially recognized the City of Renton as a StormReady Community at a special presentation to the Renton City Council. Renton is one of only five cities in King County to qualify for the StormReady designation, which recognizes the leadership of the city and the community to be better prepared for weather emergencies.

StormReady is a nationwide community preparedness program that uses a grassroots approach to help communities develop plans to handle local severe weather threats and encourages a proactive approach to improving local hazardous weather operations and public awareness. Rather than meaning a community is storm proof, a StormReady designation indicates better preparedness to save lives affected by severe weather through better planning, education and awareness.

Ready in Renton Helping You to Get Ready and Get Connected

Earthquakes, severe storms, power outages, and floods are just some of the emergencies we may experience.  Ready in Renton, a citywide campaign, works to provide you with information and resources to help you be better prepared to take care of yourself and those that depend on you in an emergency.  Become prepared in 3 Ways - make a plan, build a kit, and get involved, you’ll be glad you did.

An important part of this year’s Ready in Renton campaign is the launching of CodeRED, a community notification system.  This system is just one of many ways you have of being informed during an emergency.

Charitable Donations

The Renton Fire & Emergency Services Department, in partnership with the Renton Community Foundation (501c3), has established a fund to receive tax deductible donations. This fund replaces the Memorial Aid Fund which the Department had used in the past for donation purposes. The Renton Fire & Emergency Services Fund supports many fire, emergency medical and preparedness services provided to the community.

There are several ways to contribute to the Renton Fire & Emergency Services Fund.  Checks may be made payable to the Renton Community Foundation and sent to: Renton Fire & Emergency Services, 1055 S. Grady Way, 7th Floor, Renton, WA 98057.  You may also make a secure online donation by selecting the “Renton Fire & Emergency Services Fund” from the drop down list on the Renton Community Foundation’s website.

Donors will receive a letter from the Renton Community Foundation for their tax records.
